Itinerary:
We will have a hiking guide - John McFaul of Alpenglow. There is a cost of $25 per person. One of the most iconic hiking areas in southern Alberta is the Whaleback Ridge. Located to the north of the Oldman River and west of Hwy 22. It offers sweeping views of the front ranges and foothills. The hiking terrain is mostly comprised of native fescue grasslands festooned with numerous species of wildflowers highlighted by beautiful bunches of yellow Balsamroot daisies. Along the ridges are groves of montane forests consisting of Douglas Firs and picturesque Limber Pine. The proposed hike will be about 7 km return in length with a total elevation gain of 320 meters. There are three distinct elevation gains. The first is a moderate, gradual climb of 160 meters. We then drop down into a valley and follow it westward to a ridge which provides a steady climb of 100 meters to a lunch spot. After lunch we descend down into a second valley which we cross to climb a third ridge of 60 meters elevation gain. This ridge provides great views of the Livingston Range and the Oldman River valley. We descend this ridge to the access road and back to our cars. We can avoid the middle ridge and have lunch on top of the third ridge. There will be plenty of stops for interpretive and photographic opportunities.
