Write Up:
What a beautiful day for a hike in the Kananaskis. The weather was perfect, and the hikers were amazing. Despite some changes to the starting point (a new parking lot, a fence blocking the original trail), we managed to find our way to the trailhead. The hike up through the marshy uphill beginning was, as usual, a challenge if you didn't want wet or muddy boots. Once past that, we carried on towards the Pocaterra Valley, where the flowers were still blooming beautifully and the streams were running briskly. That was the easy part. The trail from valley end up to the top of Grizzly Ridge is very steep and filled with boulders and scree. We helped each other navigate it successfully and were rewarded with amazing views of two valleys from our destination near the top. While having lunch at the top, we were entertained by 4 hikers who were scrambling down the steep and rocky face of the mountain across from us. We then descended the ridge the same way as we came. Going through the valley, we explored some novel trails that have evolved over time, creating a very braided network of options for transversing and exiting the valley. Thanks to Dean for co-leading the hike and to the rest of the group for being so patient with those of us who are a bit more anxious when it comes to traversing steep scree slopes. I think we all agreed that we had a wonderful time!
