We started in the trees but before long we reached the extensive meadows around Grass Pass. We made a detour to Boundary Pine, a 435-year old limber pine on the ridge to the east. Upon return to Grass Pass we started the climb to the ridge between Grass and Gunnery passes. Initially the trail was well defined but it soon petered out and became faint. Nonetheless we were able to follow it to the high point on the ridge and then north to Gunnery Pass. We had lunch at the high point, sheltered behind some trees from the strong cold wind, with the mighty Holy Cross Mountain for a background. The descent down Gunnery Creek was delightful, with views down the valley and across the Highwood River to the ridges in the south. Lower down a charming bubbling brook materialized, which we followed past small waterfalls and above a small canyon too to the highway. Trip statistics: 10.5 km, 530m total elevation gain.
