Write Up:
Thirteen hikers started at Sparrowhawk Day use area and made their way up to the first tarn. There are three critical junctions on the way. The first is within 400 meters of the start of the trail, where the High Rockies trail crosses the path. Cross over the HighRockies trail and continue upward (there was a small sign indicating the correct trail to the tarns). The second junction was marked by a cairn at about 1 km into the hike and is where the trail to Read’s Ridge branches off to the left. Go straight and continue to follow a well-used trail to the third junction about 3 km along where the trees abruptly end in a rock fall. The junction is marked by a cairn and flagging on the trees to the right. Take the well-used trial to the right. This seems counter-intuitve because it seems to lead you away from the valley where the tarns are located, but the trail just courses around the rock fall and then heads steeply up to the plateau where the tarns are located. We made it to the first tarn where we had a leisurely lunch and then, with clouds threatening bad weather, we headed back to the cars. All in all, a great day with a fun bunch of Weekenders and one guest.
