Our trip started in Yoho park just west of the Great Divide Lodge. For a while we could hear the rumbling of heavy trucks on the TransCanada Highway until the trail rose above Sherbrooke Lake. The brilliant sunshine made us sweat as we walked up at a brisk pace set by the energetic Romanian, Constanine. We had a deserved break at the former fire lookout, which is well maintained to serve as a hiker’s shelter. We continued on a scrambler’s trail to a boulder field below a large cliff and avoided it by traversing on a steep dirt-and-scree slope to the far left of the slope. Here we followed tongues of grass among rocks, which were kind to our feet. After the grass petered out we traversed through rocky ground to the ridge on the far right. We followed a path along the ridge over and around small cliffs and boulders to the narrow false summit. From there it was a short, easy stroll to the broad main summit. We enjoyed views of peaks of all shapes and colours, with the elegant spires of Cathedral Crags right in our faces. We signed the summit register, with Lynn writing these words, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone,” which is actually a quote from the American writer Neal Donald Walsch...
